1st Race: Open Timber
The Howard County Hunt Cup
3 miles, over 3’6” fences; minimum weight 165 lbs. A perpetual trophy in memory of Katherine Lee Warfield. $10,000 purse.
2nd Race: Novice Timber
The Alda Clark Plate
3 miles over 3’6” fences. Minimum weight 165 lbs. For non-winners over timber prior to the 1st of the current year; for each win since the 1st of the current year add 5 lbs. A perpetual trophy.
3rd Race: Foxhunter Timber
The Hurdy Gurdy
About three miles over timber. For amateur riders who have never won a sanctioned steeplechase. Horses five years old and upward which have been regularly and fairly hunted the current season by their rider in this race. Master's certificate may be required. Proper hunting or racing attire. Weight 185 lbs. Trophy to winning rider; free cap fees to all starters. May be combined with 4th or 5th race, at the discretion of the committee.
4th Race: Ladies' Foxhunter Timber
The Harwood Perpetual
About three miles over timber. For lady amateur riders. Weight 150 lbs. Ladies who have won a sanctioned steeplechase to carry 5 pounds extra. Trophy to winning rider; free cap fees to all starters. May be combined with the 3rd or 5th race, at the discretion of the committee.
5th Race: HCIBH Member Only Foxhunter Timber
The Founders' Cup
About three miles over timber. Restricted to members of the Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds. Horses five years old and upward which have been regularly and fairly hunted the current season by their rider in this race. Proper hunting or racing attire. Catch weight. May be run as a NAPPA Field Master Chase (see NAPPA rules), at the discretion of the committee; may be combined with either the 3rd or the 4th race, at the discretion of the committee. The Founders’ Cup perpetual trophy in memory of the founding members of the Howard County Hunt Club, donated by M.L. Dawson Lee to the winner; the Iron Bridge Phantom Fox Hunt perpetual trophy to the first non-Thoroughbred winner; awards to the first man, first woman and first junior to cross the finish line.
6th Race: Ponies
The Cattail Pony Races
For juniors who have not reached their 16th birthday as of 1st of the year. Ponies must be a min. of 5 years old; catch weights for ponies and horses. Riders to follow Field Master over a flagged course of approx. 1 mile with no more than 12 obstacles not to exceed 2’3”. Field Master will release the field to race for the finish after the last jump; riders may be asked to circle or queue at any point. Ponies will run together, but be awarded separately. Whips are prohibited. Specify Division: A. Small Pony [5a] B. Medium Pony [5b] C. Large Pony [5c] Junior Horse [5d]
A $500 bonus will be awarded to the pony club, hunt club, 4-H club or stable with the greatest number of combined starts in the Cattail River Pony Races and the Harwood Perpetual. Club must present a letter to the racing secretary noting the name of the club, the adult coordinator, address and contact information, and the names of the horses and riders participating that day. 7th Race: Governor's Cup Hunt Team Relay
The Adelaide Riggs Perpetual Cup
About 3 miles of natural hunting fences (timber), max. height 3’6”. Three members per team, each team member to ride 1 lap (approx. 1 mile each) and pass baton to the next member. Team members must be a member of the Hunt Club for which they are riding, and can not ride in any other race of the day except junior or foxhunter timber races. Horses must be fairly hunted (6 times, by rider, during the past season, and acceptable to the committee) and may not be cross entered in any other race of the day. To be ridden in formal hunting tack and attire, catch weights. Baton provided at meet. Open to Maryland hunt clubs. Team must be nominated by the club, with horses and riders approved by the Masters. Each team member pays entry fee; winning team will receive a $1,000 bonus for the club’s paneling fund, donated by Land Design & Development.
